Instead, I got a marked, old, battered-up book for beginner violin players. Saint-Saëns' masterpiece was originally composed in 1872 as a song for voice and piano. It was transformed and expanded into the familiar tone poem two years later for symphonic orchestra featuring a solo violin with the top E-string tuned down a half-step and a prominent part for xylophone.
